iPad Buttons, what do they do? by Norman Gordon
If, like myself, you bought a great iPad too (and love it), you’ll probably want to get the greatest use from it. Using the Apple iPad is very intuitive – however to save learning time, I’ve assembled this easy guide – check out these iPad buttons – you will utilize them frequently:
The On/Off, Sleep/Wake button: This button is on the top of your iPad, you use it to put the iPad’s screen to rest or perhaps wake it up.
Home button: No matter what you are doing, you can press the Home key at any time to display the Home screen on your own iPad.
Application icons: Each icon shown on the touchscreen runs the appropriate iPad application. Thirteen apps come with the iPad, and you can add tons more by downloading them from the App Shop. If you dont have a particular iStore account yet, visit the apple web site and then download the itunes application, simply follow the instructions.
Volume Up/Down keys: The upper piece of the button increases the volume; the lower half decreases it.
Mute switch: Whenever the switch is set to Silent mode – the down position, with the orange dot visible on the top of the key – your iPad won’t make any sound whenever you receive or send new messages or see alert pops up on the screen. Note that the Mute switch sometimes doesn’t silence exactly what we think of as “expected” noises, which are sounds you expect to hear in a specific app. It doesn’t silence the iTunes or Videos apps, neither will it mute games and other apps that emit noises. About the only thing the Mute switch will mute are “unexpected” sounds, such as those associated with notifications from apps or perhaps the iPad operating system (iOS).
If the switch doesn’t mute these sounds whenever its engaged (that is, you can see the little orange dot on the switch), look for a No Rotation icon to the left of the Power icon close to the top of your screen.
If you see this little icon whenever you press the Mute down, there are two possible reasons. Reason 1: Your iPad is running an older version (ver 3) of iOS. Reason 2: Your iPad is running version 4 or even higher of iOS. Alternatively you could have chosen the Lock Rotation option in the Settings app’s General pane.
Reason 1 occurs due to the fact iOS 3 treats the switch as a rotation lock, without a user option to use it as a Mute switch. If that’s the case, upgrade the iPad to the current iOS version by clicking the ‘Check for Updates’ button on the Summary tab then read and carry out the instructions for updating your iPad.
The current version of iOS 5 treats the key as a Mute switch as standard, however you’re able to change it to a Rotation Lock in the Settings app’s General pane.
